Hurricane Impact Testing for Windows, Doors and Façades at MLTB
Extreme weather places extraordinary demands on building envelopes. Windows, doors and façade systems intended for hurricane-prone regions must withstand not only high wind pressures, but also the impact of windborne debris. Large missile impact testing
One of the key stages of hurricane-resistance evaluation is the large missile impact test. During the test, a timber projectile is launched at selected areas of the specimen to simulate debris carried by high-velocity wind during a hurricane or severe storm.
The test is used to evaluate the behaviour of the complete assembly, including:
- glazing,
- frame and sash profiles,
- hardware,
- joints and connections,
- anchorage,
- interaction between all components of the tested system.
The visible breakage of glass does not automatically determine the final result. The assessment is based on the complete test procedure and the applicable acceptance criteria.
Testing in accordance with ASTM E1886 and ASTM E1996
MLTB performs impact and cyclic pressure testing with reference to:
ASTM E1996 – specification defining impact requirements for exterior windows, curtain walls, doors and impact-protective systems exposed to windborne debris in hurricane-prone regions.
ASTM E1886 – test method covering the impact of missile projectiles and subsequent cyclic pressure loading of exterior windows, doors, curtain walls and protective systems.
Depending on the required test programme, the impacted specimen may be subjected to thousands of positive and negative pressure cycles. This stage simulates the fluctuating wind loads that occur during a hurricane.
More than an impact test
Hurricane testing is not limited to launching a timber beam at the glass. A reliable assessment requires controlled test conditions, accurate measurement systems, repeatable procedures and experienced technical personnel.
The process may include:
- verification of specimen dimensions and configuration,
- inspection of installation and anchorage,
- projectile speed measurement,
- impacts at defined locations,
- inspection of damage after impact,
- cyclic pressure testing,
- evaluation against acceptance criteria,
- preparation of a detailed technical report.
